I have to tell you. The way things look from where we stand, is immensely bright and beautiful when we look in one direction and terribly dark and foreboding in the other. Blessed to see this but burdened with the reality that we can no longer pursue, because to do so would be to be a part of what seems to hurt as opposed to what appears to heal.

We are not attached to how it will work, but we cannot turn back out of fear. This might look and seem foolish to those who mistake their animal nature for true and divine human nature.

We are more than what we have. We want to “have” less so we can “be” more. The truth seems so simple but the struggle to uphold it and the forces that aim to undermine it are all too real.

In a world where all you want to do is take responsibility for your burden upon the whole, to be a help and a source as opposed to being a dependent, to truly sacrifice in the name of change. It seems worth investing in.

We’re doing an odd thing, trying to stay put and grow roots. Work the soil where we stand, use the Internet and technology to avoid travel and needless consumption of resources. We enjoy working hard and are trying to work smarter. No doubt the odds are not in favor of our goal.

I don’t care about the odds though, I don’t care about fame or attention beyond what is needed to make this work. It’s for you and all because I see how much it’s wanted and needed. All the Sun does is plead with me every day to stay the course. This game has a full on faith, that the light of truth is enough and if one way fails, we’ll pick up and try another. We need your help though. We need to come together to hold this up in every way we can.

Nobody needs these objects we make, I realize this and it terrifies me. All I can hope is that people understand that I want to transform these glass objects into fertile ground for the future of my family and be one of many who know they must do the same because that is the future I see and believe in. So maybe you aren’t in a position to make soil, but you can invest in it.

My family didn’t have a garden when I was growing up, and I know it’s not possible to garden everywhere. I also know how much earth is covered with concrete and asphalt. That said, for reasons that began arising over 15 years ago, we have been studying and learning and practicing all that we possibly have time for. Things that would have otherwise been lost to us. Things we value and cherish above all else. Things that our Son will carry forward.

We need to continue to figure out how to make it work because it’s all that matters anymore and all I can do is hope and pray that people understand and that it all holds together somehow.

Whatever part you play here, I thank you for being your best self and hope we all stay bright on the darkest days because it’s all that helps.

Great thanks and blessings from the Barrett Family to you and yours and all.

The Gulf is something that has to be leaped, and leaped alone, stripped of all hindering burdens, in faith … It is thus one of the crisis points of spiritual progress because of the great temptation to turn back from the unknown to the apparent safety of known things, and to succumb to this temptation is to lose all the fruits of past endeavor.

New beads added to the shop!

Click the photo to teleport now. thanks all.

Working on a full overhaul of operations and it is good. Starting with these new additions to our shop. There is a whole lot of awesome in the works but it’s going to take some real time and effort on this side of things. More than ever, but it’s always worth it.

I’m in the workshop right this moment typing this on my phone. I’m going to offer things on this blog. Written accoutrements that I’d like to share. Things that I don’t care to toss into the turbulent book of faces like so many lost messages in a bottle.

Here I can share and know where it is, how to find it and show you. I have much to learn about making this work but I have to start and make mistakes or it will never become.

I write a lot, I share a lot because it’s something I’m compelled to do. The thing is that I can’t afford to do it as much as I would like, it takes a lot of time away from doing the work that pays my bills. (I am a Lampworker).

The idea is to try and concentrate my efforts here (again). More room to write, and it’s linked to our shop so maybe you like it and want to grab a bead to carry it with you and invest in more.

Here’s a quick poem for you to be on your way.

The Times

Every house holds three clocks.

They keep each other set with the tick and the tock.

One runs forward, one turns back, and the other is stopped.

The man looks around to find it and feels queasy at the proposition, that a timely choice is important to this mission.

Then he reaches up and takes all three. He remembered what it means to be.

I’m gonna go make glass objects now. but if the words move you more, or just enough to throw money at, or you just have so much you don’t know what to do with it, that donate button will take it and I’ll invest it well.  Thank you. Bless our place and our journey.

“Dawn to Dusk” New set and a few words to grow on.

These colors. They remind us of beginnings and endings I think.  New Dawns and days that end well.  Couple that with some earth tones and it’s the dream we live here on earth.

~We begin to become something in the dark, then we reach out from the center to define our space. The process moves this way, one center defined, one sphere. From there, it looks to create another in it’s likeness.  As the body grows, it becomes more inhabitable, more familiar. The process continues until the being is born from there to here. The self begins to take notice of this increasing physicality, of hunger and a vulnerability that didn’t previously exist. It breathes, it sees and feels. It begins to discover cause and effect. It forgets, it remembers and forgets and remembers again.

To be the remembering and forgetting is one thing, to observe it is another.  We do both, but not often at the same time. We often believe that forgotten things go away somehow, but they most certainly do not, even if you can’t remember them, all that ever was, still is. Like space dust under the influence of all that surrounds it, part of the whole, yet still differentiated. The dust will find attraction to particles that agree and they will congregate, coalesce and eventually form a body, with a center, and the process will be there too.

The process is infinitely large and magnificently small. So where you look for it, is where you’ll find it. You just have to trust yourself long enough, and let it open. It spooks when you reach or chase it. If you want butterflies and hummingbirds to land on your shoulder, then make like a flower, be love, be life, be beauty and it will seek YOU out.  Not because you’re special or godly or magical.  It’s because that’s just how it works. Distilled from dogma, the way just is simply, “the way.”

“Love” is a word.  It’s the one we have. What it means is everything. Love is greater than anything. Gratitude is joy.  You can give your attention to what needs it and what calls for it. You can also turn your back on what is looking to take it from you or frighten you away from it.  We all have a mountain we’re looking to climb. All that matters is whether or not you’re going towards it or away from it.  We all know the view is reason enough.

Carry on and be well kind travelers, I look forward to seeing you on the path.

The lessons on the ground…

Spent the day doing some stuff around the yard with Atom yesterday while Shani made beads in the shop. He’ll be six years old soon. The hunger for knowledge and experience is just on fire at this age.

“What is that? Why are we doing this? Can I help?” These are the questions all day from him.

You can’t save the world, but the world won’t save you either. You CAN learn how to live, then you CAN teach it. Remember how it was to be 6 years old or just observe some children… That’s not who you were, it’s who you are underneath the nonsense.

Some might say that if you don’t know how to get your hands dirty, then you may be out of luck when the “dirty hands” are too tired or broken or just busy helping themselves for once.

I’ve got dirt under my fingernails and my hands feel like they do things. We gathered wood to make dinner with stuff we grew last night. If a tree fell on me today, it’d just be the way. Just saying that there’s not much to gain by delegating our responsibility until we no longer have any of our own. That’s a miserable situation for everyone because it only takes a couple of generations before you don’t know how to do anything for yourself anymore. That equals all kinds of undesirable situations…

The status quo says doing it yourself is slow. The status quo says doing it yourself is for people who can’t afford to pay someone else to do it. Not that there is anything wrong with delegating responsibility, it’s an important social tool just a consideration that real experience is priceless.

Some photos with captions below…

carrot
Started out the day yesterday by having Atom harvest one of the few carrots that we have growing. It was fresh and delicious… Atom said “MMMM”,loud, at least four times while eating one 4inch long quarter of the thing. It was a damn good carrot. Shani and I thought so too.

fuzzpilar1
Superfuzz! Crazy-pillar we saw crawling around. We wanted to pet it but I recall something about that being a bad idea somehow, not sure, need to identify.

…let it wander into a jar and moved it to a safer setting…

rocketstove1
So there’s this really cool thing called a “rocket stove” that I’ve been messing with. It’s a ridiculously simple thing that can be made in an infinite number of ways. Basically it uses convection/drafting to get a lot of clean consistent heat out of a really small and manageable amount of fuel. If you follow a couple key rules in design it will work great no matter what you use. Atom and I moved and reconfigured this one in a better spot yesterday. Rocket stove Wiki

rocketstove1a
All you have to do is get a small fire going in the chamber and feed it sticks. The fire is fully contained so there’s no sparks or open flame except what’s licking the bottom of the pan/pot.

rocketstove1b
So simple, but I’ll tell you something. If I’m going to sear a piece sf meat or fish or bacon I go outside now. Not so much because of the mess and smoke, but because of the heat this thing puts out, and because gathering twigs to cook dinner with a rocket stove is awesome.

rocketstove1c
We had some old candle making stuff so we made some candles to test fire the new arrangement.

rocketstove1d
I put a lot of beef (very local grass fed thanks) on mine so the presentation is lacking but I cooked some Vietnamese beef noodle salad for dinner and it won.. (Beef browned nicely on that rocket stove, ha.) I subbed ground beef for sliced but this recipe is a keeper. << That site will nag at you a bit but it’s worth it…

Got Atom to take a photo of Shani and I with my phone. Not bad dude, nice perspective…  Hi all!!
